Bound Angel I, 2007-08

Colorado alabaster, approximately 20" x 13" x 13"

Carving this piece was my first experience using power and air tools. The stone started out weighing around 170 pounds, soon after beginning I discovered that it had many deep fissures, causing me to seriously consider abandoning it. Over time, however, I came to see the perfection of these flaws and how they relate and contribute to the piece - meaning that if a person is moving through life in this helpless position, then inevitably a rotting deterioration begins from the inside out.
