Heartbeat

6.5"x13"x3.5" 2018

How to express the internal? This sculpture is my attempt to express the inner listening to the private whisper at one's core, the voice of one's heart, the drumbeat of Life.
Everything about this piece is so beautifully feminine- the soft pink of the marble, the form and grace of the hand, caressing and protective at the same time. The soft, nourishing breasts and the counterpoint of the strength of stone.
And then there are the Buddhist tattoos...
The unalome is a symbol representing an individual’s progress from uncertainty and struggle to greater clarity, benevolence and freedom from suffering.
The lotus flower represents rising and blooming out of the muck to achieve enlightenment, and also purification and faithfulness.
The vine represents growth, the power of giving Life and the influence of Nature on the flow of society.
The tattoos were first incised into the marble because I did not want paint just sitting on the stone's surface and then painted in with acrylic paints by the great Greek tattoo artist Jen Skalkou.

Carved in pink Portugese marble, which is one of my favorites because of the warm pink color and veining that suggests skin ( caucasian, of course. Looking for marbles for all skin tones) this piece is basically a high relief and therefore great to display in locations only visibly accessed from one side.
